How Do I Find Out When My SR-22 Expires?
Drivers who get behind the wheel while intoxicated, rack up multiple violations or otherwise display dangerous driving behaviors may find themselves slapped with an SR-22 requirement. What does that mean?
An SR-22 certificate is tacked onto your auto insurance and acts as proof that you do indeed have coverage. Your independent insurance agent can help you file the proper paperwork if the need arises. Once the SR-22 is added to your policy (often for a minimal fee), the insurance provider reports it to your state DMV and you’ll be entered into a database.
If your auto insurance lapses for any reason, your insurance provider must inform the DMV. At that point, your license could be suspended until you reinstate your policy. Essentially, the SR-22 encourages you to maintain coverage.
And while the SR-22 itself has only a one-time fee, you can expect your car insurance rates to increase. Because an SR-22 signifies a risky driver, your insurer will likely raise your premiums to compensate for that increased risk.
So, how long do you need to maintain your SR-22? The answer is dependent on the severity of the infraction that mandated the restriction in the first place. You can usually expect an SR-22 to last between one and three years, though the court will tell you how long your requirement is to last.
You’ll be notified when your SR-22 requirement has come to an end, at which time that certificate can be removed from your auto insurance policy. And in many cases, your premiums may decrease to a more affordable price after you’ve completed your SR-22 requirement.
