A Pre-Season Checklist for Boaters

Before the boating season sets in, it’s a good time to prep your boat and make any necessary repairs. With your boat in great shape, you can sit back and enjoy the sunshine with minimal risk of problems along the way. We’ve put together a basic checklist you can use to inspect your boat; however, every boat is different, so you may wish to add items to this starter list.

Check for cracks in the transom and fix them immediately.

Top off all fluid levels. Ensure that steering cables and connections are in good condition.

Various fittings and rails around the boat can loosen over time. Walk around and tighten them as needed. If there are cracks around the base of a fitting, it may need backing for extra support.

Change the fuel filters and water separators to prevent a loss of power.

Inspect the fuel lines to ensure they’re not rubbing, flexing or damaged in any other way. Rubber lines in particular have a tendency to crack as they dry out.

Check the wiring to ensure that everything looks as it should. Poor splices or cheap connectors could lead to equipment failure or even a fire.

Check closed areas and bathrooms for mold. Clean as needed.

Lubricate the inside of the snap fasteners on canvas enclosures or covers to prevent the material from tearing or pulling the fitting loose.

Check the seals around windshields, windows and hatches. They may need cleaning, repairing or replacing.

Ensure the boat is stocked with a working fire extinguisher, first aid supplies, lifejackets and the tools and equipment you use to safely enjoy each boating excursion.
