Driving while drunk is an offense that some people don’t take as seriously as they should. After a DWI is issued to a particularly high-risk individual or after an individual receives a second DWI, he or she may be required to participate in a Weekend Intervention Program (WIP), delivered by the Substance Abuse Traffic Offender Program (SATOP).
The WIP a weekend-long educational intervention program conducted over 48 consecutive hours in a restrictive environment. The purpose of this structured program is to shed light to the dangerous situations the participants have caused, encouraging them to make the changes that must occur to keep them—and other drivers—safe on the roads.
The curriculum—approved by the Missouri Department of Mental Health, Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse—includes an assessment, medical screening, individual counseling, group education and other activities. These confrontational methods are designed to increase the participants’ awareness of the consequences of alcohol and drug usage, along with motivating them to take personal responsibility for their risky actions.
The WIP program has a fee of $400 that is often paid by the offender or his or her family. However, financial concerns can be addressed through the Department’s Standard Means Test.
In addition to undergoing the WIP, offenders may also be required to purchase SR-22 auto insurance to act as proof of coverage. Luckily, this process can be handled with ease by your local insurance agent.
