Red Cars and Other Debunked Auto Insurance Myths

red car driving fastWill a sizzling hot, candy apple red minivan result in higher auto insurance premiums than a black sports car just because of the color? Not likely. This myth may linger because red cars overall are easier to see, thus making them easier targets for the highway patrol. However, car insurance does not consider color a determining factor for rates. Here are the top auto insurance myths that continue to circulate, despite being roundly debunked.

Myth #1: The color of the automobile impacts insurance premiums.

Color plays no determining role in auto insurance prices for most standard auto insurance providers.

Myth #2: Full coverage automatically includes towing and rental car coverage.

Towing and rental coverage are generally separate riders that generate additional costs. Your agent can review your coverage with you, giving you the opportunity to add any coverage that you thought was already included.

Myth #3: An individual's driving record is the primary factor used in setting car insurance rates.

Your record is a critical component, yet other factors play a role as well. These include model and age of the car, the intended use of the vehicle and the auto theft rate in a specific region — among many other factors. In addition, insurers frequently give discounts for car safety features, low-risk occupations and more. Moreover, you credit report can impact the resulting premium as well.

Myth #4: Comprehensive car insurance will cover mechanical failures.

Comprehensive coverage pays for damage to a vehicle that is not caused by another vehicle.

Myth #5: Staying accident- and ticket-free will result in lower premiums after several years.

These two factors may help your rate go down; however, other factors may drive the premium up. These may include regional and national trends, such as rising hospital bills, increased expense to repair cars and lawsuits.

Myth #6: Purchasing auto insurance over the internet saves money.

You may find a premium that is lower. However, other issues may drive up the total cost of the car insurance. If you file a claim, you may discover that your discount policy lacks adequate coverage, which means more out-of-pocket expenses for you. A knowledgeable insurance agent will help you understand your policy and offer suggestions for the greatest coverage tailored to your specific needs. In addition, you may accidentally miss discounts hidden in the small online print, resulting in higher than necessary car insurance premiums.

Myth #7: No-fault insurance means that an accident is not the fault of the policyholder.

No-fault insurance means that your individual auto insurance policy can pay for injury-related expenses, regardless of which driver is at fault.
